Key takeaways

  • Smurfit Westrock’s Q3 2026 release of 28 October reports net sales of $8,161 million against $8,003 million and adjusted EBITDA of $1,205 million, a 14.8% margin, against $1,302 million and 16.3%.
  • The release cuts the company’s full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA estimate to about $4.7 billion, from the $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion range its Q2 release gave on 29 July.
  • The company expects to absorb about $700 million of additional freight and energy costs in 2026, and says price increases across most paper grades should more than offset them, with full benefits into 2027.
  • Europe, MEA and APAC earned adjusted EBITDA of $379 million, a 13.4% margin, against $419 million and 14.8%, while North America earned $760 million, a 15.6% margin, against $810 million, the release shows.
  • SPI analysis: a producer that says it is still recovering costs on a lag, and expects the full benefit only in 2027, is telling box buyers that price requests have further to run into next year’s contracts.

Smurfit Westrock, the Dublin-headquartered maker of containerboard and corrugated boxes, said on 28 October that it now expects full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA of about $4.7 billion, against the $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion range it set in July.

Its third-quarter results release, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission as an exhibit to a Form 8-K, puts the cause on costs. The company expects to absorb about $700 million of additional freight and energy costs in 2026, more than it had expected, and reported third-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $1,205 million against $1,302 million a year earlier1.

For a buyer of corrugated boxes, the second half of the outlook matters more than the cut. The release says price increases across most paper grades should more than offset those costs as they pass through, with the full benefit expected into 2027. That points to box invoices that keep rising after list prices have moved, on the normal contract lag.

How a freight and energy bill reaches a box price

Smurfit Westrock makes containerboard, the liner and fluting papers that are glued together to form corrugated board, and converts much of it into boxes in its own plants. It also makes consumer board for cartons. The company reports in US dollars across three segments: North America; Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific (EMEA and APAC); and Latin America (LATAM).

Energy is a mill cost. Drying paper on a machine takes large amounts of heat, so gas and power prices move the cost of each tonne of containerboard. Freight sits on both sides of the business: the company pays to bring wood and recovered fibre into mills and to ship paper and finished boxes out to customers.

Adjusted EBITDA, the measure the guidance uses, is earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, adjusted for items the company treats as outside normal trading. It is a non-GAAP measure, and the company publishes a reconciliation to net income for each quarter but not for its full-year estimate. Because it excludes depreciation, it moves closely with the gap between selling prices and cash operating costs such as freight, energy and fibre.

When those costs rise, a producer can raise its list price for containerboard and then for boxes. The box price follows with a lag, because many customer contracts reset quarterly, on notice or against a published paper price index. In July, the company’s second-quarter release said freight in particular had pushed input costs up, and set out its stance on recovery3.

“As always, we fully expect to recover input cost inflation through the second half of the year and beyond.”

Smurfit Westrock’s CEO, second-quarter 2026 results release, 29 July 2026

That July release also guided third-quarter adjusted EBITDA to about $1.3 billion and the full year to $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion. The third quarter came in about $95 million below the quarterly figure, by SPI’s calculation, and the full-year estimate now sits $200 million below the bottom of the July range.

What Smurfit Westrock reported on 28 October

The filing. Smurfit Westrock, incorporated in Ireland and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, furnished its results on 28 October under Items 2.02 and 7.01 of a Form 8-K, with the earnings release as Exhibit 99.1 and a results presentation as Exhibit 99.2. It held a conference call the same day at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time, with the webcast on its investor site2.

Group sales. Net sales rose 2.0% to $8,161 million from $8,003 million, by SPI’s calculation, and from $8,031 million in the second quarter, according to the release. Over nine months, net sales were $23,904 million against $23,599 million.

Group profit. Net income fell to $219 million from $245 million, a 2.7% margin against 3.1%, and basic earnings per share to $0.42 from $0.47. Adjusted basic earnings per share fell to $0.45 from $0.58. Operating profit was $487 million against $526 million1.

Adjusted EBITDA. The company’s main profit measure fell 7.5% to $1,205 million from $1,302 million, by SPI’s calculation, and the margin fell to 14.8% from 16.3%. Against the second quarter’s $1,140 million and 14.2%, both rose. Nine-month adjusted EBITDA was $3,421 million against $3,767 million, a margin of 14.3% against 16.0%.

Costs. Cost of goods sold rose to $6,721 million from $6,434 million, or to about 82.4% of net sales from 80.4%, by SPI’s calculation. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell to $927 million from $963 million. The quarter carried $26 million of impairment and restructuring costs and accelerated depreciation of $0.01 a share related to machine closures, the release says.

The cost statement. The release puts a full-year number on the cost pressure.

“For example, for the full year 2026 we expect to absorb approximately $700 million of additional freight and energy costs alone, significantly more than anticipated.”

Smurfit Westrock’s CEO, third-quarter 2026 results release, 28 October 2026

The outlook. The release gives the new full-year estimate as about $4.7 billion and links it mainly to what it calls continued and unprecedented cost inflation. It does not reconcile the estimate to a GAAP measure, citing the effort that would require1.

Cash and debt. Operating cash flow fell to $874 million from $1,133 million, and capital expenditure to $514 million from $610 million. On 30 September the company held cash of $723 million against current and non-current debt of $14,049 million, which leaves net debt of about $13,326 million, by SPI’s calculation; the release does not state a net debt figure.

Dividend and deals. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.4523 a share, payable on 10 December 2026 to holders of record on 13 November. In Latin America, the release says the company agreed in the quarter to buy the containerboard assets of CMPC in Chile, without disclosing a price.

Smurfit Westrock's three segments line by line

The segment table shows where the $97 million fall in group adjusted EBITDA came from. North America lost $50 million and EMEA and APAC $40 million against a year earlier, while LATAM gained $10 million. The remaining $17 million is the change in corporate and other items, which SPI derives as the gap between the segment total and the group figure1.

North America. The largest segment had aggregate net sales of $4,859 million, including $109 million of sales to other segments, against $4,721 million. Adjusted EBITDA fell 6.2% to $760 million from $810 million and the margin to 15.6% from 17.2%, by SPI’s calculation. Against the second quarter, when the segment earned $704 million at 14.8%, both rose.

EMEA and APAC. Aggregate net sales were $2,836 million against $2,831 million, almost unchanged. Adjusted EBITDA fell 9.5% to $379 million from $419 million, and the margin to 13.4% from 14.8%. The margin matched the second quarter’s 13.4% on $380 million, and nine-month adjusted EBITDA was $1,180 million, the same as in 2025.

LATAM. The smallest segment grew. Aggregate net sales rose 7.9% to $588 million from $545 million, and adjusted EBITDA to $126 million from $116 million, a 21.4% margin against 21.3%. Over nine months the margin was 21.3% against 22.5%, on adjusted EBITDA of $359 million against $354 million.

Nine months. North America’s nine-month adjusted EBITDA fell to $2,061 million from $2,347 million, a drop of $286 million, by SPI’s calculation. That is most of the group’s $346 million nine-month decline, with EMEA and APAC flat and LATAM up $5 million.

North America and EMEA and APAC margins fell year on year, while LATAM held above 21%

SPI calculation (the size of the cost bill): the $700 million of additional freight and energy costs equals about 15% of the $4.7 billion full-year estimate. Spread evenly, it would be about $175 million a quarter, but the release gives no quarterly split, so this is an average, not a reported figure.

Industry reaction

“We remain sold out in all containerboard grades, and most consumer grades, and our converting businesses in both business areas continue to improve.”

Smurfit Westrock’s CEO, third-quarter 2026 results release, 28 October 2026

The statement in the release sits beside its note that converting volumes were somewhat weaker than anticipated, so the mills are full while box demand is softer.

“Containerboard price increases to offset costs have been implemented and are being passed on with the normal time lag.”

Smurfit Westrock’s CEO, third-quarter 2026 results release, 28 October 2026

That sentence comes from the release’s EMEA and APAC section, where the company describes a market heavily affected by rising energy costs and a segment margin of 13.4%.

“We have, and are, implementing price increases to more than offset these costs, the full benefits of which we expect to realize into 2027.”

Smurfit Westrock’s CEO, third-quarter 2026 results release, 28 October 2026

The sentence follows the new full-year estimate in the release and sets the timing that box buyers will see in contract rounds.

Peers reporting a week earlier described the same cost pressure. Packaging Corporation of America said freight cost it $0.26 a share in its third quarter against a year earlier, as SPI’s PCA story reported. Billerud’s report tied rising European containerboard prices mainly to elevated energy costs, according to SPI’s Billerud story.

SPI has not yet confirmed what Smurfit Westrock’s management said on the 28 October conference call, or the content of its Exhibit 99.2 presentation.

Who gains and who pays as the cost bill is passed on

Smurfit Westrock’s North American business. The segment carries most of the earnings at stake. It earned $760 million of the $1,265 million segment total in the quarter, about 60%, by SPI’s calculation, and its nine-month adjusted EBITDA is $286 million below 2025. The release says the company has implemented pricing initiatives across most paper grades.

Smurfit Westrock’s EMEA and APAC business. This segment pays the energy bill first. Its 13.4% margin was flat on the second quarter and 1.4 points below a year earlier, and the release says containerboard price rises there are passing through with the normal lag. Net sales of $2,836 million were almost unchanged on $2,831 million.

Corrugated box buyers. Brand owners, food processors, retailers and e-commerce shippers sit at the end of the chain. A producer that is sold out in containerboard and expects the full benefit of price rises only into 2027 has room to keep asking. Buyers on index-linked contracts tend to see list changes sooner than those on fixed annual terms.

Consumer board buyers. Carton buyers face a similar pattern. The release says the company is sold out in most consumer grades, which leaves them less room to negotiate than in grades with spare capacity.

Shareholders. Adjusted basic earnings per share fell to $0.45 from $0.58, but the dividend held at $0.4523 a share. On 524.5 million shares outstanding on 30 September, a quarterly payment at that rate costs about $237 million, by SPI’s calculation, against $360 million of operating cash flow less capital expenditure in the quarter.

Lenders. Net debt of about $13,326 million is about $161 million lower than at 30 June but about $445 million higher than at the end of 2025, by SPI’s calculation from the two releases. On the $4.7 billion estimate, that is about 2.8 times 2026 adjusted EBITDA, a ratio SPI calculates and the company does not report.

Latin America. The CMPC containerboard deal in Chile adds capacity in the one segment that grew. The release gives no price or closing date.

USD millions unless stated. Figures measure different things (segment profit, per-share amounts, debt) and are not to be added up or ranked. Net debt is an SPI calculation.

The pinch point: sold out mills, softer box volumes

The release holds two signals that point in different directions. The mills are sold out in all containerboard grades, which supports price, but converting volumes were somewhat weaker than anticipated, which is the box demand that has to absorb the increases1.

A producer can hold containerboard prices while its own mills are full. The test comes at the box plant, where a customer facing a higher invoice can order fewer boxes, lighten board grades or move volume to another converter. The release gives no shipment volumes, so SPI has not yet confirmed how much box volume fell or in which region.

Integration matters here. Because the company converts much of its own containerboard into boxes, a sold out mill system and a weaker box plant can sit inside the same segment, and the release reports them together. A higher containerboard price helps the mill side at once, while the box side recovers it only as customer contracts reset, which is the lag the release describes.

Timing is the other variable. The company expects the full benefit of its price rises into 2027, while the $700 million cost estimate covers 2026 alone. If freight and energy costs keep rising into next year, the recovery has to chase a moving target, as the third quarter’s miss against July’s $1.3 billion expectation already shows.

SPI analysis

The guidance cut is mainly a timing gap between costs that arrived in 2026 and prices that settle in 2027. For buyers, the open question is whether softer box volumes slow those increases or whether full mills keep them on track.

How Smurfit Westrock compares with PCA, Billerud, SCA and Holmen

Five containerboard and board producers that SPI covers reported their third quarters between 21 and 28 October. They report in different currencies and on different profit measures, so the figures below are not summed, averaged or ranked.

PCA, the US box maker, reported net sales of $2,601.7 million and packaging EBITDA excluding special items of $577.7 million, and guided fourth-quarter earnings to $2.81 a share, with higher freight, fibre, chemical and energy costs, as SPI’s PCA story reported. Unlike Smurfit Westrock, PCA raised its earnings on the year, with price and mix adding $0.79 a share.

Billerud reported net sales of SEK 10,166 million and adjusted EBITDA of SEK 1,032 million, with a Region Europe EBITDA margin of 12%, and expects positive pricing in both its regions in the fourth quarter, according to SPI’s Billerud story.

SCA’s Containerboard segment earned EBITDA of SEK 446 million, a 22.6% margin, against SEK 194 million, helped by lower maintenance costs and higher kraftliner prices, as SPI’s SCA story reported. Holmen’s Board and Paper operating profit fell to SEK 128 million from SEK 356 million after a maintenance shutdown, with paperboard prices stable, according to SPI’s Holmen story.

The nine-month figures also differ in direction. Smurfit Westrock’s adjusted EBITDA for January to September fell 9.2% to $3,421 million, by SPI’s calculation, while its nine-month net sales rose 1.3% to $23,904 million. The gap between rising sales and falling earnings is the cost squeeze the release describes, and the company’s own estimate implies a fourth quarter about $74 million stronger than the third.

SPI analysis

Every producer in the group points to rising costs, energy in Europe and freight in the United States, and every containerboard seller describes prices moving up. Smurfit Westrock’s report differs in putting a full-year dollar figure on the cost bill and in cutting its estimate as a result.

What the PPWR adds for corrugated buyers in Europe

Smurfit Westrock’s EMEA and APAC segment sells into the European Union, where the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has applied in every Member State since 12 August 2026, according to the SPI Regulation Tracker for the EU. Most of its design rules start later5.

Under tracker record PR-EU-009, operators that fill grouped, transport or e-commerce packaging must keep the empty space ratio at or below 50%. The cap applies from 1 January 2030, or three years after the implementing acts that set the calculation method enter into force, whichever is later, and those acts are due before 12 February 20286.

Under record PR-EU-010, all packaging placed on the market must be recyclable, and design-for-recycling grades of A, B or C apply from 1 January 2030 or 24 months after the delegated acts enter into force, whichever is later7. Plain corrugated board faces fewer open questions than coated or laminated formats, though SPI has not yet confirmed how the delegated acts will grade boxes with barrier coatings.

SPI analysis

None of these rules moves Smurfit Westrock’s 2026 figures. They matter to buyers because a box range reviewed now for price can also be right-sized for the empty space cap, so fewer tonnes of higher-priced board go into each shipment.

What it means for you

SPI analysis

These points follow from the sources above. They are not investment or legal advice; check with counsel on PPWR obligations.

  • Corrugated box buyers: Smurfit Westrock says its price rises are being passed on with the normal lag and the full benefit lands into 2027. Budget for further box price requests in Q1 2027 contract rounds, and ask how each request maps to a containerboard list change.
  • Procurement teams: check which contracts follow a paper price index and which reset on notice. Index-linked contracts move first; fixed annual deals renewing in early 2027 are where the remaining recovery is likely to land.
  • Carton buyers: the release says the company is sold out in most consumer grades. Secure 2027 volumes early and keep a second qualified board source.
  • Logistics and finance teams: freight is part of the $700 million bill. Model 2027 packaging costs on the higher price level the company expects, not on a fall in freight.
  • Packaging engineers: right-sizing boxes and reviewing board grades cut tonnes per shipment, which offsets part of a price rise and prepares European ranges for the 2030 empty space cap.
  • Supplier risk teams: use the SPI Buyers Database to map which buyers compete for the same converters and board grades before contract rounds.

FAQ

What were Smurfit Westrock's Q3 2026 results?

Smurfit Westrock reported net sales of $8,161 million for July to September 2026, against $8,003 million, and net income of $219 million against $245 million. Adjusted EBITDA was $1,205 million, a 14.8% margin, against $1,302 million and 16.3%.

How much did Smurfit Westrock cut its 2026 guidance?

The company now estimates full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA at about $4.7 billion. In July it gave a range of $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion, so the new figure is $200 million below the bottom of that range and about $300 million below its midpoint, by SPI’s calculation.

Why did Smurfit Westrock lower its estimate?

The release links the change mainly to continued cost inflation. The company expects to absorb about $700 million of additional freight and energy costs in 2026, more than it had expected.

Will box prices rise further?

The release says price increases across most paper grades should more than offset the higher costs as they pass through, with the full benefit expected into 2027. In EMEA and APAC, containerboard increases are being passed on with the normal time lag.

How did the EMEA and APAC segment perform?

EMEA and APAC adjusted EBITDA was $379 million, a 13.4% margin, against $419 million and 14.8% a year earlier. The margin matched the second quarter’s 13.4%, and nine-month adjusted EBITDA was $1,180 million, level with 2025.

What dividend did Smurfit Westrock declare?

The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.4523 a share, payable on 10 December 2026 to holders of record on 13 November 2026, according to the release.
