Key takeaways

  • SCA’s interim report of 23 October shows Containerboard EBITDA of SEK 446 million in Q3 2026 against SEK 194 million, a margin of 22.6% against 11.0%, on net sales up 12% to SEK 1,973 million.
  • Group EBITDA was SEK 1,631 million against SEK 1,644 million and operating profit SEK 1,047 million against SEK 1,112 million, the report says, as Forest, Wood and Pulp earned less.
  • The report credits the year-on-year segment gain mainly to lower planned maintenance costs of SEK 51 million against SEK 204 million, higher selling prices and lower raw material costs.
  • SCA announced on 6 August that it would raise all kraftliner grades in Europe by EUR 100 per tonne from 1 September 2026, and its Q3 report says average selling prices rose against Q2.
  • SPI analysis: box makers have now absorbed a quarter of higher liner prices at a mill whose segment margin tripled from Q2, so corrugated buyers should expect converters to seek pass-through in Q4 and Q1 contracts.

SCA, the Swedish forest group that makes kraftliner for corrugated boxes, reported on 23 October that its Containerboard segment earned EBITDA of SEK 446 million in July to September 2026, against SEK 194 million a year earlier and SEK 135 million in the second quarter.

Its interim report for the third quarter shows group net sales of SEK 5,248 million against SEK 4,993 million, and group EBITDA of SEK 1,631 million against SEK 1,644 million. Weaker Forest, Wood and Pulp results absorbed nearly all of Containerboard’s gain, so the group margin fell to 31.1% from 32.9%1.

For a European buyer of corrugated board, the segment line is the one that matters. The full report says further kraftliner price increases were implemented in the quarter and average selling prices rose against the second quarter. That places the EUR 100 per tonne increase SCA announced for 1 September inside the quarter, and puts it into the liner cost that box makers now pass on to their customers.

How a kraftliner price reaches a corrugated box

Corrugated board is made of liner, the flat outer sheets, glued to fluting, the wavy middle layer. Kraftliner is liner made mainly from virgin wood fibre, valued for strength and moisture resistance in heavy, chilled or wet-chain packaging. Testliner, the recycled alternative, competes with it in many lighter boxes.

SCA sells kraftliner to box makers, the converters that corrugate, print and cut boxes. A converter’s largest material cost is its paper, so a liner list price rise moves through to the box price with a lag that depends on each converter’s contract terms with its customers. Some contracts follow published paper price indices, others reset quarterly or on notice.

SCA’s Containerboard segment reports net sales, EBITDA and kraftliner deliveries each quarter. The full report for the third quarter shows segment net sales of SEK 1,973 million on deliveries of 250,000 tonnes, against SEK 1,828 million on 254,000 tonnes in the second quarter2. Sales rose while tonnes fell slightly, which points to price.

SCA reports five operating segments: Forest, Wood, Pulp, Containerboard and Renewable Energy. Its own forest holdings supply part of the wood its mills use, and the release says self-sufficiency in wood, fuel, energy and logistics helped offset higher costs over the first nine months of 20261. That structure explains why one segment’s gain can vanish at group level.

SCA’s price announcement of 6 August set the size and timing of the latest round.

“SCA will increase prices for all Kraftliner grades in Europe by €100 per tonne.”

SCA, kraftliner price announcement, 6 August 2026

The release set 1 September 2026 as the start date, so the third quarter carried about one month at the new list level, subject to the share that each customer accepted.

What SCA reported on 23 October

Group sales. SCA’s net sales rose 5% to SEK 5,248 million from SEK 4,993 million, which the report attributes to higher delivery volumes. Against the second quarter’s SEK 5,153 million, sales rose on higher selling prices and positive exchange rate effects, according to the release published at 08:00 CEST1.

Group profit. EBITDA was SEK 1,631 million, a 31.1% margin, against SEK 1,644 million and 32.9%. Operating profit was SEK 1,047 million against SEK 1,112 million, and net profit SEK 772 million against SEK 832 million, or SEK 1.10 a share against SEK 1.19.

Against the second quarter. Group EBITDA rose from SEK 1,303 million, a 25.3% margin. The report names higher selling prices, lower maintenance costs and lower raw material costs as the drivers, and calls the stronger containerboard market a main driver of the quarter-on-quarter improvement2.

The price line. The summary of the quarter in the full report puts the price rise in one sentence.

“Further price increases for kraftliner were implemented during the third quarter and SCA’s average selling prices increased compared with the preceding quarter.”

SCA, interim report Q3 2026, 23 October 2026

Containerboard sales. Segment net sales rose 12% to SEK 1,973 million from SEK 1,755 million, mainly on higher delivery volumes and higher selling prices, the report says. Against the second quarter they rose 8% from SEK 1,828 million, mainly on higher selling prices.

Containerboard EBITDA. The segment’s EBITDA rose 130% to SEK 446 million from SEK 194 million, or 2.3 times by SPI’s calculation. The report credits a lower cost of planned maintenance stops of SEK 51 million against SEK 204 million, higher selling prices and lower raw material costs, partly offset by negative exchange rate effects2.

Against the second quarter. Segment EBITDA rose 230% from SEK 135 million, the report says, mainly on higher selling prices, lower maintenance costs of SEK 51 million against SEK 147 million, seasonally lower costs and a refund of tariffs paid of SEK 27 million.

Deliveries and stocks. Kraftliner deliveries were 250,000 tonnes against 230,000 a year earlier and 254,000 in the second quarter. The report says demand in Europe was robust during the quarter, while European producer stocks increased seasonally.

Cash and debt. Operating cash flow was SEK 426 million against SEK 1,111 million. Net debt was SEK 10,627 million on 30 September against SEK 10,939 million at the end of 2025, and 2.0 times last-twelve-month EBITDA against 1.7 times a year earlier1.

SCA's Containerboard results line by line

The segment table shows how much of the jump came from price and how much from timing. Planned maintenance stops cost Containerboard SEK 51 million in the third quarter, against SEK 204 million a year earlier, so lower stop costs explain about SEK 153 million of the SEK 252 million gain, by SPI’s calculation from the report.

That leaves about SEK 99 million from other lines, including higher selling prices, lower raw material costs and the SEK 27 million tariff refund, net of negative exchange rate effects. SCA does not split the price effect out in SEK, so SPI has not yet confirmed how much of the gain came from kraftliner prices alone2.

Over nine months the picture is weaker. Segment EBITDA fell 23% to SEK 685 million from SEK 884 million, and the margin fell to 12.4% from 16.8%, even as deliveries rose to 762,000 tonnes from 702,000. The report blames negative exchange rate effects and higher energy and distribution costs, offset by lower raw material costs and higher volumes.

Maintenance timing also explains the nine-month comparison. Planned stops cost SEK 198 million in January to September 2026 against SEK 204 million a year earlier, and the second quarter’s SEK 147 million and the third quarter’s SEK 51 million account for all of it, by SPI’s calculation. The report forecasts planned maintenance costs of SEK 55 million for Containerboard in the fourth quarter, out of SEK 235 million for the group.

Elsewhere in the group, volumes and prices moved apart. Pulp deliveries rose to 280,000 tonnes from 223,000, and Pulp net sales to SEK 1,764 million from SEK 1,651 million, yet Pulp EBITDA fell to SEK 198 million from SEK 242 million; the release says average pulp selling prices fell slightly against the second quarter. Wood net sales fell to SEK 1,446 million from SEK 1,544 million and Forest net sales to SEK 2,363 million from SEK 2,390 million2.

Industry reaction

“Demand for packaging paper continued to be positively impacted by stronger industrial production and by strong demand in e-commerce and consumables.”

SCA, interim report Q3 2026, 23 October 2026

The sentence in the full report sits beside SCA’s note that its own deliveries were higher than a year earlier but lower than in the second quarter.

“Price increases for kraftliner implemented during the second quarter are expected to have a gradual impact during the second half of the year.”

SCA, half-year report Q2 2026, 22 July 2026

SCA’s half-year report gave that expectation in July, and the third quarter’s 8% sequential rise in segment sales on slightly lower tonnes is consistent with it, by SPI’s reading of the two reports.

“Demand for both consumer paperboard and paper was broadly unchanged in the third quarter and prices were stable.”

Holmen’s CEO, interim report January-September 2026, 22 October 2026

Holmen makes consumer paperboard for cartons rather than kraftliner, and its interim report shows Board and Paper operating profit of SEK 128 million against SEK 356 million a year earlier6.

Billerud, which also sells containerboard, gave the cost side in its own report a day earlier. Its full report says rising containerboard market prices in Europe were mainly driven by elevated energy costs7.

SCA’s report carries no statement from its chief executive and no outlook section. SPI has not yet confirmed what SCA’s management said at the 10:00 webcast press conference on 23 October.

Who gains and who pays as kraftliner prices rise

SCA. The kraftliner seller is the clearest gainer. Containerboard’s share of group EBITDA rose to about 27% from about 12% a year earlier, by SPI’s calculation, and the segment margin rose to 22.6% from 7.4% in the second quarter2.

Corrugated box makers. Converters buying kraftliner pay the higher list price first. SCA’s segment sales per tonne delivered rose about 10% from the second quarter to roughly SEK 7,892, by SPI’s calculation, a figure that also carries currency and mix effects. Box makers with index-linked customer contracts recover that cost faster than those with fixed-price annual deals.

Brand owners and retailers buying boxes. These buyers pay next, through converters’ box prices. SCA’s report links packaging paper demand to industrial production, e-commerce and consumables, which are the segments that buy shipping cases and retail-ready packs.

Buyers of heavy-duty and wet-chain packaging. Food, produce and industrial shippers that specify virgin-fibre liner for strength have fewer substitutes. Where a specification can move part of a board grade to recycled testliner, a buyer gains a lever, subject to performance requirements.

SCA’s Forest and Wood customers and suppliers. The group’s lower Forest result of SEK 702 million against SEK 912 million, and Wood’s SEK 117 million against SEK 232 million, show where SCA earned less. The report links slightly lower solid wood prices against the second quarter partly to a larger share of lower-quality wind-felled timber.

SCA shareholders. Earnings per share were SEK 1.10 against SEK 1.19, and leverage was 2.0 times EBITDA against 1.7 times. Operating cash flow fell to SEK 426 million from SEK 1,111 million1.

Holmen. The carton-board maker paid for a maintenance stop. Its Board and Paper deliveries fell to 328,000 tonnes from 354,000, and the report cites about SEK 150 million of costs and lost production from the Iggesund paperboard mill shutdown against the second quarter.

SEK millions as reported. Profit measures differ: EBITDA for SCA segments, operating profit for Holmen, net sales for Billerud's containerboard category. Do not add up, rank or compare across rows.

The pinch point: price rises against rising stocks

The quarter’s numbers hold two signals that pull in different directions. SCA says demand in Europe was robust and that price increases went through, but it also says European producer stocks increased seasonally during the quarter2. Higher stocks give box makers more room to resist the next round.

Volume points the same way. SCA delivered 250,000 tonnes in the third quarter, fewer than the 254,000 of the second, while sales rose on price. A mill can hold price with flat tonnes for a time, but rising stocks and softer sequential volumes are the conditions under which list increases are delayed or partly given back.

The report gives no fourth-quarter price outlook. Its only forward figure for Containerboard is a planned maintenance cost of SEK 55 million, close to the third quarter’s SEK 51 million, so the maintenance benefit that flattered the year-on-year comparison will not repeat in the same form.

Currency adds a further variable. SCA announced its increase in EUR per tonne but reports in SEK, and its report cites negative exchange rate effects against the third quarter of 2025 in Containerboard EBITDA and against nine-month segment sales2. A list increase in EUR therefore lands in SCA’s accounts at a value that depends on the exchange rate, which the report does not quantify.

SPI analysis

For buyers, the open question is whether the September increase holds through winter. A mill earning a 22.6% segment margin has less need to push further, but SCA has not said either way, and Billerud ties containerboard prices mainly to energy costs, which its outlook expects to rise slightly, as SPI’s Billerud story reported.

How SCA compares with Holmen and Billerud

Three Swedish forest and packaging groups reported their third quarters within two days. Billerud and Holmen published on 22 October, SCA on 23 October, and all report in SEK, though on different profit measures.

Holmen’s group interim report showed net sales of SEK 4,945 million against SEK 5,327 million and operating profit of SEK 549 million against SEK 737 million5. Its Board and Paper business area earned SEK 128 million, down from SEK 254 million in the second quarter, mainly because of the Iggesund maintenance stop and lower deliveries, the full report says.

Billerud’s group net sales were SEK 10,166 million against SEK 9,905 million and adjusted EBITDA SEK 1,032 million against SEK 1,058 million, according to its full report. Its Region Europe EBITDA rose to SEK 734 million from SEK 652 million, a 12% margin, and its containerboard category sales rose to SEK 1,356 million from SEK 1,251 million7. SPI covered that report in its Billerud story.

The nine-month figures show all three groups below 2025. SCA’s net sales for January to September fell 3% to SEK 15,141 million and EBITDA to SEK 4,041 million from SEK 5,328 million, which the release ties mainly to higher raw material costs and lower prices1. Holmen’s nine-month net sales were SEK 16,049 million against SEK 16,873 million and operating profit SEK 2,066 million against SEK 2,531 million, and its report cites higher energy costs, a weaker dollar and slightly lower paper prices and deliveries, partly offset by lower pulpwood prices.

By SPI’s reading, the common thread is that sellers of containerboard did better than sellers of carton board in the third quarter. SCA’s Containerboard and Billerud’s containerboard sales both rose, while Holmen’s CEO describes paperboard prices as stable. SPI’s Billerud story also reported that Billerud saw excess supply in cartonboard.

What the PPWR changes for corrugated box specifications

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has applied directly in every Member State since 12 August 2026, under SPI Regulation Tracker record PR-EU-001, with most design rules starting in 20308. Three of those rules bear on how many corrugated boxes a buyer orders and how they are specified.

By 1 January 2030, operators filling grouped, transport or e-commerce packaging must keep the empty space ratio at or below 50%, under record PR-EU-009, with the measuring method due in an implementing act by 12 February 20289. Right-sized boxes use less board per shipment, which matters more when each tonne of liner costs more.

From 2030 the PPWR also sets reuse targets of 40% for transport packaging and 10% for grouped packaging, under record PR-EU-006, and a recital refers to certain cardboard packaging being exempt10. SPI has not yet confirmed the exact scope of that exemption from the article text.

From 1 January 2030, all packaging is expected to be recyclable and graded A, B or C against design-for-recycling criteria, under record PR-EU-01011. Plain corrugated board faces fewer open questions than coated or laminated formats, and SPI has not yet confirmed how the delegated acts will grade boxes with barrier coatings.

SPI analysis

None of these rules changes SCA’s reported figures, but they shape the board tonnage European buyers will need after 2030. A buyer facing higher liner prices now and an empty space limit later has two reasons to review box ranges in the same project.

What it means for you

SPI analysis

These points follow from the sources above. They are not investment or legal advice; check with counsel on PPWR obligations.

  • Corrugated box buyers: SCA’s increase of EUR 100 per tonne applied from 1 September and its report says increases went through. Expect converters to seek pass-through in Q4 and Q1, and ask how the request maps to liner cost.
  • Procurement teams: check whether your box contracts follow a paper price index, reset quarterly or run fixed for a year. Index-linked contracts move first, so plan Q1 2027 budgets on the September liner level.
  • Converters: SCA’s segment margin rose to 22.6% while European producer stocks rose seasonally. Use the stock position and the 254,000 to 250,000 tonne fall in deliveries when negotiating the next round.
  • Packaging engineers: where heavy-duty or wet-chain performance allows, test whether part of a range can move to recycled liner grades, and right-size boxes ahead of the 2030 empty space limit.
  • Finance teams: SCA’s nine-month Containerboard EBITDA is still 23% lower than in 2025, so the third quarter is a recovery, not a new peak. Model liner costs at the new level, not at a further rise.
  • Supplier risk teams: use the SPI Buyers Database to map alternative kraftliner and testliner sources and the buyers competing for them before contract rounds.

FAQ

What were SCA's Q3 2026 results?

SCA reported net sales of SEK 5,248 million for July to September 2026, against SEK 4,993 million, and EBITDA of SEK 1,631 million against SEK 1,644 million. Operating profit was SEK 1,047 million against SEK 1,112 million.

How much did SCA's Containerboard EBITDA rise?

Containerboard EBITDA rose 130% to SEK 446 million from SEK 194 million, about 2.3 times by SPI’s calculation. The margin rose to 22.6% from 11.0%, and from 7.4% in the second quarter.

Why was the Containerboard gain so large?

SCA credits a lower cost of planned maintenance stops, SEK 51 million against SEK 204 million, higher selling prices and lower raw material costs. Before maintenance stop costs, segment EBITDA rose about 25% year on year, by SPI’s calculation.

Did SCA's kraftliner price increase come through?

SCA’s report says further kraftliner price increases were implemented in the third quarter and average selling prices rose against the second quarter. SCA had announced a EUR 100 per tonne increase for all kraftliner grades in Europe from 1 September 2026.

Why was group EBITDA flat?

Forest, Wood and Pulp earned SEK 369 million less than a year earlier, by SPI’s calculation from the segment table. That offset most of the gains in Containerboard and Renewable Energy, leaving group EBITDA SEK 13 million lower.

When does SCA report next?

SCA publishes its year-end report for 2026 on 29 January 2027, according to its third-quarter report.
