SPI analysis

What this means for packaging suppliers

SPI analysis Our reading of the sourced facts above. Not company-reported, not legal advice.

Tata Consumer Products reports 80% of its packaging as recyclable, compostable or reusable and now aims for 100% by 2030, so the remaining work sits in the hardest formats: multi-layer laminates used for salt, tea and staples in India, plastic pouches, overwraps and catering bags for Tetley abroad, and non-compostable teabags. That points to demand for recyclable mono-material or paper-based flexible laminates suited to high-speed Indian packing lines, paperboard cartons, and plant-based teabag materials. India's plastic EPR, recycled-content and rigid reuse rules add pressure on PET bottles for its water brands and on rigid formats, while the UK Plastic Packaging Tax and packaging EPR fees add cost to plastic films used by Tetley and Teapigs. Apart from a 2022 mention of work with Sonoco on a recyclable can, no packaging supplier relationship is publicly announced, so this describes where demand is likely, not who supplies it.

Data gaps

What the sources reviewed do not show, or what we could not confirm. Know something we have missed? Tell the SPI team and we will check it.

  • Packaging tonnage by material and recycled-content share are not reported in the sources reviewed.
  • No recycled-content target of the company's own was found (the India and UK Plastics Pact targets are pact-level).
  • No 2030 virgin plastic target or packaging-related Scope 3 target found.
  • Countries of the Stansand subsidiaries are not stated; Kenya presence not confirmed.
  • The over-40 international markets are not named; EU member state, Japan, Middle East and other presences not confirmed.
  • Stock exchange ticker symbols not captured from a fetched source.
  • Employee figure (11,233 worldwide) has no explicit as-of date on the page read; the BRSR workforce table uses a different boundary.
  • Current status of the Sonoco recyclable can work (2022) and European Plastics Pact membership not re-confirmed.
  • Publication date of the Integrated Annual Report 2025-26 not stated; BRSR dated May 2026 from the NSE filing name.
  • The BRSR 'Plastic waste' figure of 7,694 tonnes (FY 2025-26) appears in the operational waste table; its relation to packaging placed on the market is unclear, so it is not used.

About the SPI Buyers Database

Purpose
To help packaging makers and suppliers see what large buyers have committed to publicly, by end use and region, and how far they have got.
Coverage
42 large brand owners and retailers so far, chosen for their size in packaging demand. It is not a complete list of buyers in any market.
Data sources
Each company's own sustainability, annual and ESG reports, press releases and filings, plus official sources where a pledge was made to a public body.
SPI Methodology
For each target we record the wording, the target year, the latest progress the company reports and a short quote from the source. Status says met or missed only when the company states the result; otherwise it shows in progress or not reported.
Limitations
Companies report on different bases and years. Headquarters countries and end uses are assigned by the SPI team and are not separately sourced. Rows have not yet been re-checked by a second SPI team member. No contacts, purchase volumes, supplier relationships or pack specifications are included.
