Knowing what a competitor launched is easy. Knowing why it worked, what it costs them to run, and whether you could do it better is the harder question. We answer the harder one.
White space analysis maps every pack in a category against the dimensions that matter commercially, such as cost per unit, format, recovery rate and claim position, then identifies the combinations nobody currently occupies. The output is a picture of where the category is crowded and where it is not.
The finding is the easy half. The valuable half is the filter applied afterwards, because most empty positions are empty for a reason. Somebody has usually tried them, found the economics did not work, and withdrawn quietly enough that no case study exists.
So we test every gap against one question. What has changed that makes this position viable now when it was not before, and do you specifically have the converting base and cost structure to take it.
Plot any packaging category on cost against recovery and the formats line up in a band. Cheap packs recover poorly, recoverable packs cost more. The interesting territory is the corner that breaks the trade-off.

A shelf audit records what is present: brands, facings, prices and claims. A teardown takes the pack apart and records how it is made, including substrate and gauge, layer structure, decoration method, closure type, adhesive and label construction. One tells you what a competitor is selling. The other tells you what it costs them to make and how hard it would be to match.
Most white space is empty for a reason, and testing that reason is the core of the work. A gap is worth pursuing only when the barrier has changed: a material became available at volume, a regulation shifted the fee position, a converting technology dropped in cost, or a consumer behaviour moved. Where no barrier has changed, an empty position usually means somebody tried it and withdrew.

Most engagements combine both, using desk research for breadth across the category and teardowns for depth on the packs that matter most.
Annually for a full category baseline, with quarterly tracking on launches and reformulations. Categories under regulatory pressure move faster and often justify a shorter cycle. A benchmark refreshed once and then left alone becomes misleading within about eighteen months, because it captures a position the category has already left.
Analysing a product bought at retail is standard industry practice. What we do not do is acquire confidential information, approach competitor employees under pretext, or advise on anything that would infringe a live patent. Where a teardown reveals protected technology, we say so and identify the design-around question instead.
